Incredible Biodiversity

Amazonia Expedition’s exclusive access to the Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo reserve provides you with the opportunity to experience a diversity of lowland rainforest ecosystems. Here scientists have documented the greatest diversity of species of mammals and birds of any site yet studied in the lowland Amazon basin. Additionally, the site has more species of monkeys than any protected park or reserve in the world including the rare Bald Red Uakari and a newly described species of saki monkey. Other species of note include two species of freshwater dolphins, sloths, poison dart frogs and giant river otters.

ZIKA AND MALARIA FREE EXPERIENCE

The acidic ecosystems of the Tahuayo River Basin where our lodges are located do not support the mosquito species Anopheles darlingi and Aedes aegypti (unlike many other rainforest lodges are still prone to mosquito borne diseases). As a result of the absence of disease carrying species of mosquitos, there is no Zika, Malaria, Dengue, or Yellow Fever in our region of the Amazon, and you can travel here with your mind at ease. To learn more about why the species of mosquitoes cannot survive in our region, click here.

THE LODGES

During your stay, you have two lodges as options available. The main Tahuayo Lodge has the greater variety of excursions, but the research center lodge is nestled in pristine forest and offers a more natural view of the rainforest. People typically spend time at both the main lodge and at the Research Center Peru Lodge to maximize their activity options. A minimum of six days is required to access both lodges.
