Costs and Trip Length

Amazonia Expeditions is open all year round, which allows for you to come whenever you’d like for however long you want.

For any period of time you decide to stay in our jungle lodge, each day is broken up into 3 meals, and at least two activities: one between breakfast and lunch, and one between lunch and dinner.

There are some variations to this, for example our sunrise hike, or nighttime canoe rides to go stargazing, but the average day has two main activities. Although you can choose between a 4 day, 6 day, 8 day, or longer trip, we recommend staying for at least 8 days to see as much of this incredible region as you can. The Amazon Rainforest, and the Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo reserve in particular, is a beautiful mosaic of ecosystems with unique communities of flora and fauna. In order to see more than just one or two of these ecosystems during your stay, and investment of several days is needed.

In the sample provided below, it focuses on 3 days at the main lodge, and 3 days at the research center lodge with a standard number of activities for each day.

As an additional note on our two lodges – You can reserve time at either or both lodges according to your interests, but to stay at the research center lodge you have to spend at least two nights there. To learn more about our lodges and the amenities included with each lodge, click here.

Itinerary

Here at Amazonia, you are in charge of your own adventure. But if you’d like a place to start from, you can take a look at our signature itinerary

Signature Adventure Day 1:

Iquitos -> Main Lodge

Upon arrival in Iquitos, you will be greeted after clearing baggage security in Iquitos Airport by our staff in the parking lot waiting area. They will be wearing T-shirts with our logo, (the head of a hoatzin bird in a diamond shape).

From the airport, you will travel to the river and board a speedboat for the 4 hour ride up the Amazon river, and into the Tahuayo tributary to the main lodge.

Lunch is provided upon arrival, and you are introduced to your personal guide before afternoon and evening excursions begin.

Signature Adventure Day 2:

Main Tahuayo Lodge

After breakfast, the first item on the agenda is to try out our well-known canopy platforms and ziplines. This activity offers a unique view of the Rainforest Canopy, where you might catch a glimpse of bird of paradise and other wildlife. After ziplining for the morning, join your guide on a hike into the varzea forest behind the lodge. In this ecosystem, it isn’t uncommon to see pygmy marmosets, owl monkeys, yellow-crowned brush tailed rates, and wire-tailed manakins. If you’re lucky, you might also see black tamarins, saddle-backed tamarins, and trogons. Following these activities, you guide will bring you back to the lodge for lunch. Your next stop could be into Lake Tapaje, where your guide will take you around in canoes to explore this beautiful ecosystem. The evening would be closed off with dinner, and potentially a night-time canoe ride to stargaze on the river.

Signature Adventure Day 3:

Main Tahuayo Lodge

For your third day, before sunrise, head out for a special birding tour to see many different species when they are the most active. After returning back to the lodge for food, canoe out with your guide into the tahuampa forest (flooded forest) to paddle past giant ficus trees, see the charismatic hoatzin birds, horned screamers, and look for caiman from observation platforms. After leaving the tahuampa forest, return to the lodge for lunch before heading out to the terra firme forest. From here you can hike with your guide into frog valley search for beautiful little poison dart frogs, which were studied by scientists from Uppsala University (Sweden) September-November 2013. In the terra firme forest you can also see a bat cave and if you are feeling brave, even crawl through. Once you make it back to the motorboat, you and your guide can head to Lake Charo to catch a glimpse of pink dolphins. En route to Lake Charo, be sure to keep an eye out for squirrel monkeys, sloths, and raptors. After the day of hiking, return to the lodge for dinner and to relax.

Signature Adventure Day 4:

Main Tahuayo Lodge

For your fourth day in the Amazon, and last day at the main lodge, join your guide after breakfast to go fishing for piranha on the river. All equipment for fishing is provided from the lodge. After fishing, and taking a dip in the river, come back to the lodge for lunch. Your next stop would be to the native village of El Chino. Here you could visit the artesania cooperative where some of the locals sell their crafts as souvenirs. In addition to this, you could also visit the farm and the newly built schools in the village. After your visit to the village, you would come back to the main lodge to pack your things for your departure to the research center lodge the next day.

Signature Adventure Day 5 and 6:

Main Tahuayo Lodge -> Research Center Lodge

After breakfast, you will depart with your guide to the remote research center lodge. On the boat ride over we stop often to see bats, sloths, monkeys, raptors, and toucans. It will take all of the morning to make it to the research center lodge, and so lunch will be provided upon arrival. After lunch, and for the rest of your stay at the research center lodge, you would be hiking with your guide through the various ecosystems that surround the lodge. On days where you decided to stay out for the full day, a lunch would be packed for you to take a long with you.

The rainforest here is more pristine, and guests often see rare wildlife that cannot be seen anywhere else in the world. With 100 km of hiking trails, laid out in a grid to facilitate the scientific collection of population data, there is never a lack of paths to follow. The trails go through several ecosystems, including bajial, high and low restinga, palm swamp and terra firme. On any of the hikes, you may see many different species of monkeys, including brown and white capuchins, saki monkeys, titi monkeys, squirrel monkeys, pygmy marmosets, moustached tamarins, saddle-backed tamarins, and sometimes uakaris, as well as giant tayra weasels and tamandua anteaters.  Data collected from camera traps also reveal a high density of jaguar live here but these are rarely seen. Boating the various lakes and rivers from the research center we often see caiman as well as the highly endangered giant river otters.
Signature Adventure Day 7:

Research Center Lodge

For your last full day in the Amazon, after breakfast you would hike with you guide to Lake Yarina. From here, you can see beautiful hoatzin birds on their nests, as well as blue and yellow macaws and howler monkeys. After spending the day at Lake Yarina, you would return back to the research center lodge for dinner and to prepare your things for returning to the main Tahuayo lodge.

Signature Adventure Day 8:

Research Center Lodge -> Tahuayo Lodge -> Iquitos -> Onward

On the morning of your last day, you would return to the main Tahuayo lodge after having breakfast at the research center lodge. After getting all of your things together, having lunch in the main lodge dining hall, and filling out a survey about your experience, the departing groups will all board the afternoon boat back to Iquitos. From here, you would fly to Lima and continue on to your next destination.

Shannon Taylor
The trip was fantastic! Oh how I loved it. The animals, the kill, the people, the stars. I had never been on a tour. I always travel alone. Everyone was wonderful. The truck was full of laughter and knowledge….I can go on and on. Thanks so much!
Judy van Evera
We are filled inside with a million pictures and memories of multiple wildlife experiences. Johannes and I enjoyed our Africa trip very much, in part also because Alfredo is such an excellent leader; calm and composed with a wonderful sense of humor, treating group members with 'special needs' the same as people who travel 'lightly'.
Seraina Gessler
The trip was spectacular. Exceeded expectations, especially the Uganda extension. Plus the group was lots of fun, really solid folks.
Kelly Clarke
These past two weeks in Africa were absolutely some of the most thrilling of Jim’s and my lives. The trip was beyond expectation in so many ways. We are most grateful for having had the opportunity to travel once again with Amazonia Expeditions on such an awesome adventure. Alfredo always does a superior job in managing the day-to-day operations.
